Cook It! Kits

Based on a needs assessment of our clients, we determined that 83% of single-room occupancy (SRO) tenants would cook more frequently if they had adequate cooking supplies. So in 2013, thanks to generous funding from the San Francisco Human Services Agency (SFHSA), we created the Cook It! Kit program.  So far, we have distributed over 500 Cook It! Kits to individuals living in SROs who attended our Food Smarts Workshops. In addition to a copy of The Tenderloin Cooking School:  Smart Meals for Small SpacesCook It! Kits include:

  • Crock pot
  • Cutting board
  • Chef knife
  • Vegetable Peeler
  • Wooden stirring spoon
  • Food storage container
  • Measuring cups (liquid)
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Dishwashing Soap
  • Sponge
  • Dish towels
  • Olive oil
  • Can opener
  • Spices (oregano, garlic powder, cinnamon)
  • Grater
  • EatFresh.org reusable bag

Recipients come from many of our partner agencies.  A sample: Healthright360, Compass House, Tom Waddell Urban Health Clinic, Trans Thrive/Tom Waddell, Hospitality House, San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Interfaith Community Services, Clara House, Alexander House, HOPE SF, MEI, Hospitality House, and Verona Hotel.
