Bilingual Nutrition Educator

Leah’s Pantry is a California non-profit organization that promotes healthier lives among low-income and food insecure populations throughout California. We work with CalFresh-eligible individuals and individuals with high nutrition risk to support healthy, sustained behavior changes through interactive, effective, and culturally relevant programs, both in person and online. We also provide staff trainings to organizations that serve low-income individuals in order to build their capacity around nutrition education programming. Last, we ensure that the right tools exist to make these programs effective. Examples of tools developed and maintained by Leah’s Pantry include: Food Smarts curriculum, EatFresh.org, the EatFresh.org Mini Course, and cookbooks developed by community members.                                                                                                                                            
Leah’s Pantry is looking to hire a bilingual nutrition educator to teach approximately 20 nutrition education workshop series and presentations starting August 2018 through June 2019 (with the opportunity to extend through June 2020). All classes will be taught in Chinese to older adults in San Francisco and will use the Food Smarts curriculum. 

Position Role and Responsibilities

  • Each workshop, facilitators are required to plan for class, shop for food and gather necessary materials. 
  • Conduct nutrition education and cooking workshops using approved Food Smarts curriculum and materials. 
  • Post a summary of each workshop to our online community.

  • Ability to embrace the flexible mindset required to be successful in a small but busy organization. Sense of humor a must!

  • Maintain organized and clear records, including attendance sheets and paperwork. 
  • Life-long learner.  Eager to learn new things, in new ways, from a wide variety of people.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of San Francisco agencies and health resources a plus. 
  • High comfort level with technology products.  Leah’s Pantry uses Microsoft Office products, Google Docs and Dropbox. 
  • Bi-literacy required in Chinese (preferably both Mandarin and Cantonese).
  • Local travel required. Applicants must have access to a car with a clean driving record.
  • Demonstrated competency in cooking. 
  • Demonstrated competency in oral presentation. 
  • Demonstrated competency in learner-centered group facilitation. 
  • Background check required. 
  • California food handlers certification preferred (but not necessary). 
  • Have had experience working with a low-income and ethnically diverse older adults. 
  • A background in education, cooking, or nutrition is required.

Compensation

  • Expenses for mileage and parking will be reimbursed by Leah’s Pantry. 
  • Payment for classes will be paid at a per class rate that includes time for class preparation, travel, instruction and evaluation.
  • The pay rate is $45 for 30 minute presentations, $60 per 60 minute classes and $70 per 90 minute classes.  
  • Mileage is reimbursed at $0.54 per mile. 
  • Facilitators are paid as employees of Leah's Pantry, not as subcontractors.
